The revelations through the research indicate that the suicidal tendency among the persons over 65 years of age is on the increase. The study further reveals that, out of the population in this age group which consists of 13% of the total population among the whites, the percentage of suicide among elders over the age of 65 comprises 18% of the total deaths.

The main reasons for such a suicidal behaviour is attributed to mental depression, chronic illness with pain, mental disorders, death of the life partner and a feeling of insecurity in the society. Lack of productive activity and loneliness are other factors attributed for such a situation.

The death of spouse gives a traumatic experience to the one who feels insecure in his or life and they see that death can unite them with their spouse who died earlier. The aged people who are retired after a productive life no longer feels secure and have a un wanted feeling in life.

Another suicidal tendency seen among persons over the age of 55 is homicide-suicide where one spouse kills the other spouse and commits suicide and such type of death account for 1500 persons every year.

Some of the behavioural changes associated with the suicide tendency among the elder people are irritation, loss of appetite, shift in sleeping patterns, unbearable pain and headaches. Such signs can not be construed as indications of suicidal tendency but only an indication towards such act. Mental depression is a major cause towards the suicidal behaviour.

It is not likely that all the persons who commit suicide gives some signals for it, yet most of hem give some signs through friends or relatives.

If you find some indication of committing suicide by a person you must act immediately by taking the person to a psychiatrist and provide necessary counseling which can give hope to the person to live longer and creates a feeling of wanted and loved by others.
